How to make your perfume last longer: 7 simple tricks

If your perfume fades by lunchtime, it is usually not the bottle that is the problem. It is how and where you put it on. These seven simple habits make any fragrance hold for hours longer, and none of them cost a cent.

1. Moisturise your skin first

Fragrance clings to oil, so dry skin lets it fade fast. Put on an unscented lotion or a little plain moisturiser before you spray, and the scent has something to hold onto. This one change alone can add hours.

2. Spray on your pulse points

Pulse points are the warm spots where blood runs close to the skin: your wrists, the sides of your neck, and behind your ears. The warmth slowly lifts the scent through the day, so a spray there lasts longer than a spray on a cold part of your arm.

3. Do not rub your wrists together

It feels natural, but rubbing crushes the top notes and makes the whole scent fade quicker. Spray, then let it dry on its own. Leave it alone.

4. Spray onto skin and clothes

Skin carries a scent in the way it was made to, but fabric holds fragrance even longer. A light spray on a scarf or collar keeps the scent going all day. Just test a hidden spot first, since some oils can mark delicate or light fabrics.

5. Reach for heavier scent families

If you want all-day staying power, the notes matter. Warm, heavy families like amber, oud and woody scents last far longer than light, fresh citrus ones. Our guide to the best long-lasting perfumes under R100 picks out the ones that hold best, and you can see the full range in the 30ml shop.

6. Layer for extra hold

Wearing two scents from the same family, a warm one over a warm one, makes the whole thing last longer and smell richer. Because every bottle is the same low price, it is easy to build a bundle and keep a couple of matching scents on hand to layer.

7. Store your bottle properly

Heat, light and air break fragrance down over time. Keep your bottle in a cool, dark place, like a drawer or a cupboard, not on a sunny windowsill or in a steamy bathroom. A well-stored perfume keeps smelling the way it should for far longer.

A quick recap

Moisturise first, spray your pulse points, do not rub, use skin and fabric, lean on heavier scents, layer when you can, and store the bottle out of the heat. Do these and even an affordable 30ml bottle will carry you through the day.
